This was God's first covenant to man that promised fulfillment of the earth
It is sometimes split into two parts: The Edenic covenant and the Adamic covenant
1.) Eve and Adam ate of the forbidden fruit- this led to their expulsion from the garden sanctuary and their entrance into the land
2.) Cain and Abel's sin- Cain killed Abel which meant the family got kicked out of the land and put into the world
3.) Seth's line- Seth's lineage was filled with wickedness like intermarriage, which brought an end to the world
When it comes to church fathers' ideas on creation, there is always discussion about what the term "day" refers to:
Cyprian said in the Treatises (250 AD):
"The first seven days in the divine arrangement contain 7000 years."
Pope Francis said (2014): “Evolution in nature is not inconsistent with the notion of creation, because evolution requires the creation of beings that evolve.”
Basil of Caesarea (329–379) argued for the literal sense of Scripture against the distortions of allegory. Basil said twenty-four hours fill up the space of one day.
This was God's second covenant to His people; An unconditional one
Adam and Eve's seed: Through their lineage God promises a savior- Jesus Christ - who will crush Satan
~Genesis 3:15 And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel."
It was established with Noah after God sent the flood
to rid the earth of wickedness
The world Became so corrupt that God decided he would kill everyone and everything to renew the world except Noah and his family
The Sabbath: On the 7th day of creation God rested and later commanded to keep that day holy with worship and rest
~Genesis 2:3 So God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it God rested from all his work that he had done in creation
~Exodus 20:11 For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.
~Genesis 6:13 Then God said to Noah, “The end of all flesh has come before Me; for the earth is filled with violence because of them; and behold, I am about to destroy them with the earth.
After the flood Noah built an alter and gave offerings to the Lord. God promised Noah that there would never again be another devastation to the world
Anton Koch 1768-1839
God directed Noah to build an ark where two of each animal would reside during the flood
~Genesis 8:20-22 Then Noah built an altar to the Lord, and took of every clean animal and of every clean bird and offered burnt offerings on the altar. The Lord smelled the soothing aroma; and the Lord said to Himself, “I will never again curse the ground on account of man, for the intent of man’s heart is evil from his youth; and I will never again destroy every living thing, as I have done.
~Genesis 6:14 Make for yourself an ark of gopher wood; you shall make the ark with rooms, and shall cover it inside and out with pitch.
~Genesis 7:2 You shall take with you of every clean animal by sevens, a male and his female; and of the animals that are not clean two, a male and his female
God chose Noah because he promised Adam and Eve a line that would lead to Jesus
Noah was the new, first generation and his son, Shem came to be the godly line that led to Jesus' birth
This goes along with the third covenant, the Abrahamic- God promised to bless the line of Abraham, who came from Noah.
Later, when God's people built the tower of Babel against God's will, He scattered them all into 70 nations
God put forth the rainbow as a sign and reminder of His promise to never bring a flood again
Alter Worship developed; There was YHWHism and idolatry; No sanctuary
God said to Noah:
~Isaiah 54:9 For this is like the days of Noah to Me, When I swore that the waters of Noah
Would not flood the earth again;
So I have sworn that I will not be angry with you Nor will I rebuke you.
~Psalm 104:6-9 You covered it with the deep as with a garment;
The waters were standing above the mountains.
At Your rebuke they fled, At the sound of Your thunder they hurried away. The mountains rose; the valleys sank down
To the place which You established for them.
You set a boundary that they may not pass over,
So that they will not return to cover the earth.
Plato claimed that if the flood happened it didn't cover the whole earth it only covered the plains
In response, Tertullian (c.160–225) spoke of fossils in the mountains testifying to a time when the globe had been covered by water. "There was a time when her whole orb, withal, underwent mutation, overrun by all waters. To this day marine conchs and tritons’ horns sojourn as foreigners on the mountains, eager to prove to Plato that even the heights have undulated."
