WHAT IS A HOMOPOLAR MOTOR?

A Homopolar motor uses direct current to power rotational movement, such as that generated by a battery. Homopolar motors can be made out of a single AA or C battery, a single neodymium disc magnet and a piece of copper wire. It is called a Homopolar motor because, unlike conventional DC motors, the polarity of the magnetic field emitted by the conductor and the permanent magnets does not change.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

1. Attach the magnet to the negative side of the battery.

2. Bend the wire so that one end touches the positive battery terminal and the other touches the magnet under the negative battery terminal. You'll need copper wire to bend around two sides of the battery.

3. As the copper wire scratches the magnet the wire will begin to spin.

OUR DRIVING QUESTION

What are the Effects of Electromagnetism and how electric motors work?

CONCLUSION

EQUIPMENTS

1) Copper Wire

2) A neodymium magnet

3) A AA battery

If there is an electric current flowing throughout the circuit, then it will cause a force on the wire. The electric current between the battery and magnet caused a force on the wire. Therefore making the wire spin. This can be seen as Electromagnetism because there was a force that caused an interaction between the electronically charged particles.
