Christopher Nolan is an English-American film director, screenwriter, and producer. He is known for his use of nonlinear storytelling, psychological depth, and inspiration from film noir. Born in 1970, Nolan began creating short films at the age of seven. He studied English Literature at University College London and joined the school's film society. During his time there, he met a young woman named Emma Thomas, who would later become his wife and partner in the film industry. His directorial debut was Following (1998), a short, small-budget but critically and commercially successful black-and-white thriller. The success of Following and another independent film of his, Memento (2000), led to the opportunity to create big-budget films like Insomnia (2002)and The Prestige (2006). Nolan achieved further popularity with The Dark Knight trilogy (2005-2012), featuring the highly popular DC Comics superhero Batman, and Inception (2010). His most recent work is Interstellar (2014) a sci-fi epic. In 2001, Nolan and his wife co-founded their film production company Syncopy Films Inc. Nolan frequently works with his brother, Jonathan. Nolan has been regarded as a postmodern and contemporary filmmaker, and often been cited as an auteur. He prefers to film using film stock as opposed to digital video, and prefers to use practical effects in his films whenever possible over the use of computer-generated imagery.
The Dark Knight is a 2008 superhero film featuring the DC Comics superhero Batman. In the film, Bruce Wayne, aka Batman, portrayed by Christian Bale, encounters a criminal mastermind known as "The Joker" (Heath Ledger), whilst dealing with his public image, corruption, and the rise of Gotham City's newly elected district attorney, Harvey Dent. The film became highly successful, both critically and commercially. It set numerous box office records during its theatrical run and considered one of the best superhero films ever made, a claim I personally agree with. In my opinion, the biggest highlight of the film was the portrayal of the Joker by Heath Ledger. His performance captured the spirit of the character better than any other even that of Jack Nicholson's portrayal of the character. There is even a scene that Ledger had perfectly improvised the Joker's actions during a planned hospital explosion that was delayed. Originally, the explosions were supposed to go simultaneously with teh Joker walking straight into a bus, but when the explosions didn't all go off, Ledger begin to fiddle with his remote detonator until the explosions actually went off. I equally enjoyed the score as composed by Hans Zimmer, whose music style I appreciate immensely. The film displays Nolan's common themes of human morality and social injustice. It also does great justice to the Joker not only as Batman's arch nemesis, but as the greatest comic book super villain of all time, and offers him as almost a mirror image to the Caped Crusader. If there is any one aspect I was a little iffy about, it was that there a few plot holes that didn't make any sense, such as the Joker's timing of the bombs for his escape from prison and Batman taking the blame for the death of Harvey Dent, but those pale in comparison to the fact the entire trilogy would have suffered without those plot holes (specifically, the third film and Batman's character development). I would not change a single part of this film, but I would like to see that The Dark Knight Rises made a few more references to the Joker as his actions led to a lasting impact on the Dark Knight trilogy mythos.
