Melting and Casting

All the raw materials are melted together in an electric furnace, and then the molten steel is cast and placed in semi-finished forms.

Forming

Life Cycle of the Stainless Steel Backing on a Watch

Recycling

The semi finished steel go through certain forming operations, beginning with hot rolling. Blooms and billets are formed into bar and wire, while slabs are formed into plates, strips, and sheets.

The final step is recycling. Stainless Steel. Most stainless steel products are recycled through remelting. In fact, most stainless steel products now contain about 60% recycled stainless steel.

A chromium film is used to for rust and corrosion resistance. Other components of stainless steel are molybdenum, nickel, titanium, copper, austenite, carbon, nitrogen, silicon, and manganese. The following metals are used to enhance the structure and the properties of stainless steel

Finishing

Life Cycle

What is Stainless Steel?

Heat Treatment

Surface finishing is an important specification for stainless steel products. Certain surface finishes make the product easier to clean. Polishing is creates a smooth surface, which also makes the steel more resistant to corrosion. Since, in this case stainless steel is used as an accessory, finishing is really important.

There are generally 7 steps to the life cycle and manufacturing of stainless steel. of stainless steel, which include melting and casting, forming, heat treatment, descaling, cutting, finishing, and recycling.

After the stainless steel is formed the steel goes into heat treatment. Steel is heated and cooled under controlled conditions to relieve internal stress and soften the metal.

Stainless Steel is an iron-containing alloy. Stainless Steel is at least 10.2% Chromium. As a result, stainless steel have excellent resistance to stain or rust. For this reason, stainless steel is used for watch backs and kitchen appliances.

Cutting

Descaling

Cutting operations are usually needed after for to create the desired blank shape. This can be accomplished through mechanical cutting, blanking, flame cutting, and nibbling. Mechanical cutting is accomplished with knives. Blanking punches the metal into shape. Flame cutting is accomplished with fire. Nibbling is used to punch holes in the metal to achieve the desired shape.

Heat treatment result in scales to form on the steel. Several ways are used to descale the steel. The steel can be pickled by being placed in acid bath, or is can be descaled through electrocleaning, where an electric current is applied to the surface using a cathode and phosphoric acid.
