Cell Analogy: Soccer Team

Endoplasmic Reticulum

(Smooth/Rough)

Plasma Membrane

Cytoskeleton

Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum makes lipids and steroids while Rough Endoplasmic reticulum makes proteins.

This compares to a soccer team because the making of proteins would be a soccer mom. Soccer mom make goodie (protein shakes, prepares energy snacks, etc.) for her soccer player.

The Cytoskeleton is a network of protein filaments and tubules in the cytoplasm of living cells. This is what controls the shape of the cell.

The workouts that the team does to train would be the cytoskeleton of the cell. These workouts determine the overall performance and shape that the team is in.

The Plasma membrane of a cell delimits the prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells, establishing a border between the intracellular and extracellular media.

Just as the plasma membrane establishes a border between intracellular and extracellular media, so does the in-bounds and out of bounds lines on the soccer field.

Flagella

The Cell

Mitochondria

The flagella is important for the locomotion and sensory organelle. The flagella checks chemical balances and temperatures outside of the cell.

The side-line trainer is much like the Flagella. The side-line trainer stands by and checks external injuries of the player when the player is hurt.

The Mitochondria produces energy for the cell

The energy drinks such as Gatorade and Powerade acts as the mitochondria of a soccer team.

We think of a cell as a soccer team ...

Golgi Apparatus

Lysosomes

The Golgi Apparatus stores and modifies proteins for specific functions and prepares them for transport to other cells.

The subs in a soccer game are much like the golgi apparatus in the sense that subs are prepared and ready to go in for another teammate so that the player can rest and prepares him/her self to come back in.

The lysosomes are the cell's "disposal unit". Replacing old or unneeded organelles from the cell.

The coach in a soccer team would be like the lysosomes. The coach replaces players that have been in the game longer and/or are tired players with subs- energized players.

Nucleus

Ribosomes

Cilia

Ribosomes are protein molecules are made of complexes of RNA and can move anywhere in the cell. Their function is protein synthesis and pair each codon of messenger RNA with the right Amino Acids

The Nucleus controls gene expression and mediates replication of DNA

The referee of a soccer team can be compared to the nucleus of a cell because the referee controls how the players can express themselves.

*Example- when a player is being too aggressive, the referee tells them to stop, therefor controlling the action.

The cilia is a hair like process that is capable of rhythmical motion - acts in unison with other structures to bring movement to the cell.

Cilia can be compared to the plays of a soccer game. Each play in the game causes the players to all move to specific areas of the field, moving in unison each time the play is executed.

The Defensive players on the team can be compared to the ribosomes of the cells because these players block specific oponnents - they are paired with an opposing player.
