Many of Shakespeare's pieces of text combine 2 or more genres, like romance and tragedy or comedy and romance. He links the styles of genre together to create more complicated plays, with deeper meanings and stronger relations between characters.

The First Folio

Tragedy - a play dealing with tragic events and having an unhappy ending, especially one about the downfall or death of the main character.

Shakespeare's First Folio was an official compilation of 36 of his plays. It was published in 1623 and is the only reliable text for about twenty of the plays. It included 14 comedies, 10 histories and 12 tragedies.

  • Comedies - he completed 17 comedies including A Midsummer Night’s Dream
  • Tragedies - he wrote 12 tragedies including Romeo and Juliet, Macbeth and Hamlet.
  • Histories - 10 histories were written including Henry V and Richard III

Shakespeare - A Brief Overview

Shakespeare is a 450 year old play write, actor and poet, writing over 40 plays and 154 sonnets, that are still read and analysed to the current day. Many of these texts have been very successful, and include many genres and themes still discussed today.
