A Study of Calorie Restriction

"Calorie restriction and human longevity: how can we learn from the Okinawans?"

Willcox et al (2006)

  • Average intake for a woman 1000-2400 calories
  • Lowest recommended and most effective for weight loss in obese people 1000-1600 calories
  • Restricting calories = restricting nutrients and vitamins

Case Study

"Recurrent torsades de pointes in association with a very low calorie diet"

Crawford et al (2009)

Summary:

Conclusion

Upon introduction of low calorie diet in 1970's, a woman age 40 started using diet technique when 6 months in she collapsed. Such response to dieting had never occurred before.

Diagnosis:

Connection with tongue patch:

Episode diagnosed as "torasades de pointes" or ventricular trachycardia which is a rapid heart beat originating in the ventricular chambers. May lead to ventricular fibrillation, asystole or sudden death.

  • Results of diet not from the patch itself, but the diet it prescribes
  • Upon patch removal, high risk of unhealthy lifestyle relapse
  • Promotes life style change, not a quick fix

Conclusion:

NOT RECOMMENDED

Extreme low calorie diets have been seen to have some connection with ventricular arrhythmia as there have been 17 fatal cases to date (2009) directly associated with such dieting technique

Target Population

So What Do We Know About Obesity?

"Treatment modalities of obesity: what fits whom?"

Hainer et al (2008)

  • Unsafe: health risks, not FDA approved, high risk of relapse

1) Obesity rates are increasing

2) Obesity affects quality and quantity of life

3) Obesity treatment is NOT a quick fix, however it is a LIFE-LONG commitment
