In November 2007, Samuel James Cooper attempted to rob a bank. While running away from the police, Samuel dropped his gun. It was said to be a Ruger 9 mm semi-automatic pistol that police believed was used in the killings.

Samuel James Cooper was convicted on five counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of five people. His trial lasted more than a month, there were 52 state witnesses and 11 defense witnesses. Defense attorneys argued that Samuel Cooper suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder but the state argued that Cooper is a cold-blooded serial killer who was deliberate in the crimes. They said he knew what he was doing and went as far as hiding evidence so he wouldn't be linked to the crimes. Superior Court Judge Henry Hight sentenced Samuel James Cooper to life in prison without the

possibilty of parole.
