Intro

Today we will learn about the Giant Barrel Sponge. We will look at the habitat, preys, predators and what it looks like. There is not a lot of info about this sponge, so please try to understand, however you are more then welcome to jot down some notes. Now with out further ado sit back, relax and please en-joy! Thank you.

Prey and predator

Prey

Giant Barrel Sponges filter the water around them and “eat” the plankton from the water. Then they filter out the excess water and the cycle re-starts.

Predators

Now, you may think to yourself “If they are so big, do they have predators?” Well yes, they do. They are surprisingly prey to sea turtles and grey angelfish.

Giant Barrel Sponges prefer to live in saltwater or tropical areas, so they are commonly found in coral reefs such as in the Caribbean Sea, the Bahamas, Bermuda waters and even Florida reefs!

Xestospongia muta (A.k.a Giant Barrel Sponge) are just one the 5000 species of Sponges and makes them an extraordinary find. Giant Barrel Sponges have three names. The scientific, the normal and the cool name. Their “cool” name is “Red Wood of the Sea” because they can get up to 5 meters tall and walls can get up to 6 inches thick and they have no skeletons. They also weigh up to 80lbs. In other words, they are tall enough to fit an average person! Their life span can be up to 2000-2300 years! This makes them the longest living sponge and the tallest sponge in the world! Their color can be brownish- grey to reddish. Kind of boring in color, no?
