Whole sentence speech

Whole sentence speech is the phase in which the child has the ability to form complete sentences. This usually occurs around the age of two.

This is a leap pad tablet. Leap pads have different educational games on them such as learning to write letters or learning to read. They are recommended for ages two to five.

Formal Operations

During this stage, children are able to carefully and methodically plan an approach to a problem. This stage begins around the age of 11 to 12 and lasts through adulthood. This is the last stage of intellectual development. It is here that you truly attain irreversibility in which you are unable to mentally return to your starting point.

An example of problem solving: Going to the bathroom down the hall instead of waiting in line for the one outside of your classroom.

Modeling kits and puzzles such as this one are ideal for this age group because they require thinking and concentration.

Concrete Operations

This stage occurs around the ages of 7-11. It is when children begin to think logically about things but are having problems understanding abstract or hypothetical concepts. Conservation is an important milestone in this stage.

An example of conservation: Say I have three different shaped glasses. I have 6 cups of water and I put two cups in each glass. The child would understand that each glass contains the same amount of water.

Lite Brites are ideal toys for this stage. Not only because I absolutely loved mine, but because they promote creativity and thinking outside of the box.

Piaget's sensorimotor

In this stage, children begin to interact with their surroundings. The sensorimotor stage lasts from birth to two years of age. Object permanence is the biggest accomplishment of this stage, occurring at around 8 months.

Telegraphic Speech

During this stage, children begin putting words together, usually a verb and a noun. It is called telegraphic speech because it sounds like a telegram. Telegraphic speech is a big deal for children when it comes to expressing themselves and independence. This is an important stage as communication skills are still being refined.

This toy, recommended for

ages 2 and up, teaches

phrases like greetings and

manners. It teaches 2-word

sayings such as thank you.

Baby gyms are appropriate

because they allow the child

to play and interact with their

environment. This can also

assist in fine tuning the motor

skills such as grasping and

other various skills learned

in this stage. They are

recommended for ages 0-24 months.

Piaget's Toy Connection

One-Word Speech

During this stage, babies progress from babbling to saying one word such as milk or mama. One-word speech typically occurs around the age of one. This is a big accomplishment for babies as they are beginning to express themselves.

B.F. Skinner suggests that the emergence of language is the result of imitation and reinforcement

This is Violet. Violet is a super cool new interactive learning tool that can be programmed to help teach your baby to spell their name, learn phrases and songs, routines, feelings, etc. It comes with a USB cord to give her new things to teach your baby. This toy is recommended for ages 6 months to 3 years.

Babbling

Babbling is the first stage of language development. It typically occurs around 3-4 months of age. When babbling, babies make sounds that make no sense such as 'goo goo ga ga.' Babbling is crucial for language development.

Preoperational

During this stage, children really tend to suffer from egocentricism. They think that everything is about them and if it isn't, it should be. This occurs between the ages of 18 and 24 months. Playing house or other pretend games are common during this stage as children acquire the ability to mentally visualize objects and events.

Baby jumpers are perfect for the babbling stage. They play music and teach babies about colors and shapes in multiple languages. They also promote walking. These are like the upgraded baby gym from the previous slide. Baby jumpers are typically recommended for ages 3-12 months.

These toy houses are great for children in this stage as they allow the kids to pretend and act like their parents.

Noam Chromsky hypothesized that everyone has an LAD (Language Acquisition Device) located in their brain. We learn how to speak through the LAD. Babies are starting to explore the world around them by the time they enter the babbling stage, and they are listening and observing. This is how they acquire a language.
