Chemical fertilizer may be helpful to plants but to the water cycle it can get very harmful. The way fertilizer can get into the water cycle is the same way rainwater moves into bodies of water. Runoff. It comes off the crops and into the water cycle with the runoff.
What Is Fertilizer, and Where is it found?
Fertilizer is a type of chemical that you can put on some plants to make them grow faster usually used on crops. Fertilizer can be found many different places but where you mostly likely see it used on is farmland, or someones lawn. Fertilizer isn't just a chemical though it comes in different kind of forms one more commonly known as manure.
How it Affects plants and animals
The nutrients of fertilizer that helps plants grow can pollute the water and affect the water cycle in a bad way. When fertilizer gets in the water it makes a rapid growth in algae in the water. This causes bacteria to feed off the algae and it consumes all the dissolved oxygen. In result this makes all the algae to die and in result the fish die too.
How chemical fertilizer affects humans
There are a couple different ways that chemical fertilizer can affect humans but the most common ways are the lungs problem. When the chemicals that you put on plants get in your lungs it can get into your breathing system an really mess up your lungs and make it difficult to breathe.
What you can do to fix this problem.
There are lots of different things that you can do prevent fertilizer from being a pollutant to the water cycle. I will give two examples that are simple and easy but will make a big difference. Example 1. If you use more manure as fertilizer it is more natural so it will not have a large affect on the water cycle and is way less pollutant. Example 2. I'm not saying that chemical fertilizer can't be used but when or if you use it would help the water cycle greatly if use it very responsibly and only use it on the plants necessary.
