Without Araceli Gilbert's influence on Ecuador, the art would probably be a lot more figuratively based. Her art was very abstract and geometric, which was different than many artists at the time. Ecuador's art style was very resistant to European culture, but Araceli Gilbert helped to change this.

Early Life

Araceli was a very great and successful artist and won many awards. She was very hardworking and one of her greatest achievements was introducing non figurative art into Ecuador. Another great achievement was being awarded the National Prize of Culture by the Ecuadorian Government in 1989.

Araceli Gilbert was born in Guayaquil, Ecuador on December 6th, 1913. She was very studious and went to the School of Fine Arts in Chile. She learned a lot about European Expressionism and was apart of a group called the Society of Independent Writers and Artists.

Art Style / Motivation

Araceli Gilbert's art style is mostly very abstract with many geometric shapes and this was influenced by Auguste Herbin, creator of the Abstract Creation Group in 1931. She contacted him and Herbin acted as a mentor to Araceli. She was involved in many artistic movements and groups during her time.
