Interviewing a 50-year-old grandma

Interviewing Mr Albert Poon

I work here everyday from 7.30am to 5pm. My job is to clean leaves. I hope that people don't throw litter too much and I think people are very inconsiderate.

It's my first time here and we just discovered this place. We are here to exercise and my children can play around at the playground. We spent 3 hours here bonding as a family. From 1 to 10, I will rate this park 9 as I think it's really nice here. Besides this park, I will prefer to go Zoo, Botanic Gardens and Sentosa as a family.

At 7.30am, I exercise, do taiqi and many other things. The other side of the park is hotter because there are fewer trees there so I don't go there.

Observation

Interviewing a group of 6 old people exercising

I'm exercising here for 1 to 1 and a half hours. I stay nearby and I exercise alone as my children were all grown up and had their own families. It's quite quiet now but it's very crowded in the morning. Actually, the exercise stations were too crowded and the park is too small so from the rate of 1 to 10 I will rate here as 6. Other than this park, I will also go to the reservoir beside Khoo Teck Puat Hospital to exercise.

There are 5 Chinese and 1 Indian, with a teacher at the front as she patiently leads them

Although we are old, we persevere to exercise everyday. Our teacher teaches us some movements. The harder the movements, the fewer the number of people who come. Tomorrow, the movements are easier so more people will come.

Interviewing an Indian student

We came here to exercise. The air here is fresh because it is on high ground. When we come to Singapore, we will come here, partly because my sister lives around here. This park is great, if I live in Singapore I will come here everyday.

9 as I like that it is on a hill. I hope that the government doesn't renovate or demolish this park because carbon dioxide from the cars will not travel up as the park is on a hill.

  • The growth of the estates under Nee Soon's ownership started when as a young man of 24, Nee Soon bought land from the government around the Seletar River for cultivation.
  • Before the arrival of rubber, in the middle of the 19th century, the area around the Seletar River was a flourishing gambier and pepper stronghold. These crops declined at the end of the 19th century, to be replaced by rubber.
  • At the peak of Nee Soon's career, his rubber estates covered many different areas. Nee Soon district developed into an extended settlement as Chinese immigrants were hired to become labourers in the rubber plantations. They then settled down forming villages, paying a token amount for the land they rented from Nee Soon.
