The House of Burgesses &

The Mayflower Compact

Magna Carta

The colonists drew upon their claims to traditional English rights and insisted on raising their own representative assemblies. Such was the case with the Virginia House of Burgesses, the first popularly elected legislature in the New World.

Parliament

House of Burgesses led to Congress

Since 1619, Americans have had a republic. Voters chose representatives to make laws to protect the citizens. Examples include: town councils, state legislatures (The General Assembly in RI) and our national Congress (The House of Representatives & The Senate.)

Modeled after the English Parliament, the House of Burgesses was established in 1619. Members would meet at least once a year with their royal governor to decide local laws and determine local taxation.

The Mayflower Compact led to the Declaration of Independence and The Constitution

In basic terms, the Mayflower Compact was a social contract. The men who signed it agreed to abide by the new government's laws in exchange for shared protection. It set a precedent and was indeed an influential document for the founding fathers as they created the Declaration of Independence and the US Constitution.
