President McKinley signed the Treaty of Paris that day after the U.S. senate approved it by vote of 52 to 27.

The United States Navy lead by Commodore George Dewey crushed the Spanish squadron in Manila Bay and the Spanish naval base at Sangley Point in Cavite.

On this date, a letter from Spanish ambassador Enrique Dupuy de Lome got intercepted somehow and outed into the public. The contents of this letter included negative comments about President McKinley and how he governed Cuba and it fueled anti-Spanish and pro-war feelings in the United States. It just started a huge scandal.

After the insurrection was brought under control in 1878 by the Spanish, American investments in Cuba, mainly in sugar and mining, rose to about $50 million. The United States in fact traded more with Cuba than Spain did. On February 24, 1895, insurrection broke out again.

Wilson's division (the 16th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry) reached Coamo. U.S. forces inflicted heavy losses on the Spanish garrison there, killing two of its ranking officers and taking 167 prisoners. Afterwards, Wilson continued toward Aibonito where he encountered heavy resistance from the Spanish troops in the mountains.

February 15, 1898

An unknown ship blew up on the Havana, Cuba harbor killing 266 out of the 354 crew members. The United States blamed it on Spain and it resulted in a blockade of ships in Cuba and a declaration of war.

President McKinley called for 125,000 volunteers and Spain declared war on the United States.

Spanish general Valeriano Weyler and Nicolau instituted a policy of reconcentration to control Cuban insurgents. The policy forced the population to move to central locations under Spanish military jurisdiction as the entire island was placed under martial law.

The Treaty of Paris ended the Spanish-American war. The terms of this treaty included Spain paying $20 million for the Phillippines, them liquidating their possessions in the West Indies, while Cuba became independent.

A Spanish General named Vara Del Rey died in the fighting and the battle San Juan Hill took place which resulted in America taking over. This victory opened up the way to Santiago de Cuba.

The United States declared war on Spain on this.
