Stone Centipede

Other Behaviors

Lithobius forficatus is negative phototactic. In addition, recent research has shown that Lithobius forficatus is positively thigmotactic. The eyes of Lithobius forficatus are clusters of ocelli. 20 to 50 in number, and they are present in many groups of Lithobiidae. However, they are absent in some (Kadner & Stollewerk, 2005).

Habitat

Lithobius forficatus is almost nocturnal .In most cases it can only be found during the day time underneath stones of under a pile of dead leaves. This is mainly because it has no wax on its surface to prevent loss of water through its surfaces. Therefore, it hides underneath stones, soil and even underneath dead leaves.

Introduction

Refernces

This organism is commonly referred to as Stone Centipede. The scientific name that is the name that is internationally recognized and accepted across the globe is Lithobius forficatus. This organism found in many parts of the world, but the specific areas it's found in bulk is in the Germany, city of Berlin in Berlin-Dahlem Botanical Garden.

Foraging Ecology

Stone Centipede

From time immemorial, Lithobius forficatus have been said to be wholly carnivorous as their mode of feeding. However, a recent study by many scientists indicates that they also feed on some litter. It also feeds on some green matter that is litter. The major reason scientists came to the conclusion about this organism eating some litter was the presence of litter in the guts of Lithobius forficatus that was not connected with the presence of remains of an animal.. Further study by scientists shows that Lithobius fornicators use the sense of sight to recognize food. On the other hand, experimental observations done in scientific labs and on the ground indicate that Lithobius forficatus hunts for its food using the sense of touch. Lithobius forficatus are oblivious to the presence of food lest they touch the food. They mainly feed on insects, insect larvae, small worms, and small animals and occasionally in litter (Lewis, 2008).

Reproduction

My Garage Hinesville Georgia

The reproduction of Lithobius forficatus does not involve copulation. The males deposit spermatophore and deposits on the web for the female Lithobius forficatus to take up. They reproduce by means of hatching egg. The female lays the eggs –normally the number ranges from 10 to 15 eggs. The female covers the eggs in soil and leaves them to hatch. Hatching takes from 1 month to few months (Tursman, Duman & Knight, 2011).
