Linear Production System vs. Circular production sytem

Circular Production

Biology Service Learning Project

  • In this step, resources would be taken from windmills, ecologically-friendly tree farms, or a recycled plastic producer such as MBA Polymers, which uses a system to separate, grade, and distribute plastics in a manner that it is as good as virgin plastic (Mike Biddle TED Talk)
  • Product is manufactured in a factory where renewable energy such as solar is used
  • Enforce pure environmental taxes so that any pollution is taken full responsibility for (Tax Policy Center)
  • Product is used to its full potential
  • Consumer is happier and less exhausted due to less constant pressure to shop (Story of Stuff Project, 2007)
  • When product's life has reached full extent, it will be put back into earth (compost, recycled plastics, etc), thus completing a full "cycle of matter" which is essential to the Earth's health
  • Items are priced so that cost is fully covered by consumer (debate on whether consumer will be willing to spend a few more dollars still going on)
  • Used & recycled items at stores such as SCRAP, which work to extend the life of products and use them in creative manners

Linear Production

This is a more beneficial alternative to the current production system

  • Extracting resources from the earth to create products = trashing the planet
  • Over 80% of America's forests = cut down (Story of Stuff Project, 2007)
  • 60% of the world's rivers = undrinkable (Story of Stuff Project, 2007)
  • Habitat destruction for animals
  • Relocation of native peoples
  • Distribution to stores
  • Most products priced too low; consumer doesn't actually pay
  • Instead, factory workers "pay" for product with their health
  • Plants and animals "pay" with their homes and resources
  • Store employees "pay" with their low income and lack of health care (Story of Stuff Project, 2007)
  • Manufacturing product in factory
  • 70% of Gross National Trash = industrial waste from factories (Mother Jones, 200)
  • China: 83 million people will die prematurely of lung disease (BBC News, 2008) caused by factory pollution
  • Levels of toxins in breast milk have come to dangerous levels in women, especially factory workers (Story of Stuff Project, 2007)
  • Consumer buys and consumes product
  • 99% of objects last only up to 6 months
  • Planned obsolescence: product is designed to break after a short time so consumer must buy new product afterward
  • Perceived obsolescence: lots of advertising to convince consumer to keep shopping!!!
  • (Story of Stuff Project, 2007)
  • Products disposed of in landfills
  • Toxins leak to rivers, etc
  • WORSE: Burned in incinerator
  • Dioxin: Most harmful toxin known to man, created by incinerator (Story of Stuff Project, 2007)
  • Most "recycled" material is sent off to third-world countries (The Environment, 2009)

The linear production system is the system we use today to create, consumer, and dispose of products. As you will see, it has many flaws.
