Always be cautious when walking around cluttered workplaces such as restaurants where it is easy for a spill to go unnoticed. Be careful where you step and always keep a look out for liquids on the floor or potential tripping hazards.

Tripping or slipping on liquid or tripping hazards in the workplace can cause something as simple as a bruise or something as serious as a fracture, sprain or broken bone. A common injury which results from slipping is a bruised tailbone (as you fall backwards). The most serious potential injuries would inclued head and spinal injuries. It is possible to obtain these serious injuries by something like tripping or slipping which is seemingly not very serious. These injuries could include a concussion, a tweaked spinal cord or being knocked out from hitting your head on the ground. If you are working in a restaurant, for example, (where many teenagers have jobs) there are many other potential injuries. Tripping on a box on the floor or slipping on some juice may cause you to grab for the edge of a counter for balance without realizing that it is actually a burner on the stove. This could leave you with serious burns. An even worse possibility would be that you stick your hand in a deep fryer which would leave you with even more serious burns.

If you are working in a workplace such as a restaurant, for example, if you see a tripping or slipping hazard then it is important to do something about it. It is important not to leave it because there are many potential injuries which it may cause for you or another person. If you know how to clean the liquid up or are able to pick of the tripping hazard, then it is your responsibility to clean it up. Never assume that another person will clean it up later. Also, always keep a clean, tidy workplace and if you spill something on the floor, clean it up straight away. If you have any questions about how to clean something up properly or are not trained to pick up a certain material (such as a chemical) then tell your boss or a colleague immediately.

The Hazard

Many young workers in the workplace are faced with the hazard of slipping or tripping on a hazard on the floor. An example of this would be having a pool of liquid such as juice spilt on the floor in a restaurant and a young person working as a waitor or waitress.
