Two french inventors invented a toy with a fixed rotary wing that was similar to a helicopter

FIRST DESIGN

Though the first actual helicopter wasn’t built until the 1940s, it is believed that Leonardo da Vinci’s sketches from the late fifteenth century were the predecessor to the modern day flying machine. As with many of da Vinci’s ideas, he never actually built and tested it but his notes and drawings mapped out exactly how the device would operate.

THE FIRST DESIGN OF the HELICOPTER WAS DESIGNED BY Leonardo DA VINCI

The basic idea of a helicopter flight through rotating horizontal wings goes back at least 1,500 years, through a simple invention known as the Chinese top" that still survives today in various forms. This is a toy with a rotor blade mounted on a stick, and spinning the stick between the palms of the hands or by pulling a string wound around it causes it to soar into the air. The toy eventually made its way from China to Europe, where it appeared in paintings dating as far back as 1463. Not long after that, in 1483, Leonardo da Vinci illustrated a more sophisticated "rotary-wing" toy in his famous notebooks. However, building a rotary-wing aircraft that was any more than a toy was beyond the technology of the time, and remained so for centuries

The evolution of helicopters

  • Compared to airplanes, the development of which can be clearly traced to Otto Lilienthal, Samuel Langley, and the first fully controlled flight of a piloted powered aircraft by Orville and Wilbur Wright in 1903, the origins of successful helicopter flight are considerably less clear. A pure helicopter can be defined as any flying machine using rotating wings.

Igor Sikorsky and Vought-Sikorsky September 14, 1939

the helicopter was the first to use a single main rotor and tail rotor design. While piloted by Igor the first attempt lasted only for a few seconds. The first free flight took place on May 13, 1940. The innovative 28-foot diameter, three-blade rotor allowed for variable pitch of the blades with a blade speed of 250 to 300 mph.The concepts demonstrated in the VS-300 provided the basis for the first production helicopters and became the standard for helicopter manufacturing across the world.

THE INVENTION OF THE HELICOPTER

The concept of the helicopter goes back hundreds of years, and at the dawn of powered flight at the start of the 20th century, aviation pioneers believed that rotary-wing aircraft were right around the corner. In fact, while fixed-wing aircraft were quickly refined and improved, it wasn't until the mid-1930s that the helicopter began to emerge as a practical flying machine. This document outlines the early history of the helicopter, with a particular focus on early Sikorsky helicopters.
