National Anthem of Nicaragua:

Spanish Lyrics

Salve a ti, Nicaragua

Salve a ti Nicaragua en tu suelo,

Ya no ruge la voz del cañón

Ni se tiñe con sangre de hermanos

Tu glorioso pendón bicolor,

Ni se tiñe con sangre de hermanos

Tu glorioso pendón bicolor.

Brille hermosa la paz en tu cielo,

Nada empane tu gloria in mortal

Que el trabajo es tu digno laurel

Y el honor es tu enseña triunfal,

es tu enseña triumfal.

English Translation

Hail to You, Nicaragua

Hail to you, Nicaragua.

The cannon's voice no longer roars,

Nor does the blood of our brothers

Stain your glorious bicolored flag.

Nor does the blood of our brothers

Stain your glorious bicolored flag

Peace shines in beauty in your skies,

Nothing dims your immortal glory,

For work is what earns your laurels

And honor is your triumphal ensign.

Nicaragua's population

Nicaragua's Government:

NICARAGUAS GEOGRAPHY

Largest but most sparsely populated of the Central American nations, Nicaragua borders Honduras to the north and Costa Rica to the south. It is slightly larger than New York State. Nicaragua is mountainous in the west, with fertile valleys. Two big lakes, Nicaragua and Managua, are connected by the Tipitapa River. The Pacific coast is volcanic and very fertile. The swampy Caribbean coast is apparently called the “Mosquito Coast.”

Nicaragua's Capital

Primary Education In Nicaragua, the school year runs from February to November and elementary education is free and compulsory. However facilities are inaccessible to tribes in remote areas where it is still customary for children to work for their parents from a young age. Of those children that do enroll, only 30% make it through grade 6. Some say the government has a policy of forced drop-our rates owing to the paucity of facilities down the line.

Secondary Education A secondary school education is a luxury of which many poorer Nicaraguans can only dream, because the country is still harshly divided along language and ethnic lines, and the wealthy minority rule. Those fortunate enough to make it though grade 12, qualify to study further at local universities only, such is the world’s evaluation of the quality of their school education.

Vocational Education

Vocational training as it exists in a country still battling with poverty and illiteracy is largely in the hands of private colleges in larger centers. As a result, the most that the majority can anticipate is a lowly paid, menial job especially in rural areas. Where they exist, vocational colleges offer 2 to 3 year courses in technical and vocational education. The main qualification is a technico superior.

Currency

Nicaragua's currency is the córdoba, written with the symbol C$. The córdoba is divided into 100 centavos. The exchange rate at the time of writing was 20.2 córdobas to the US dollar, and is now relatively stable. Dollars are a useful standby across Nicaragua, and this will increase with the widespread acceptance of the dollar across Central America.

Nicaragua's Culture :

Famous People:

  • The majority of Nicaraguans, those who live on the Pacific coast, have derived their culture from a mixture of the native Indians and the Spanish settlers of the 16th century. Consequently, many of the cities retain a strong Spanish influence and Catholicism is the dominant religion.
  • Those on the Atlantic, on the other hand, were more influenced by the English due to the fact that the English controlled that side up until the 19th century. Protestant religions are more common here than on the Pacific coast although Catholicism is still the dominant religion. There are only a few indigenous Indians left and they reside in the eastern half of the country and are the only group which has remained ethnically distinct and which has retained many of its tribal customs and languages.

  • Each city in Nicaragua has its own patron saint and some saints are generally shared between towns. The people give gifts to these saints in exchange for blessings such as healing, a good crop, or a husband. But perhaps even more important than the miracles which the people seek are the annual celebrations (fiestas) which are held for each saint.

  • These fiestas are times of great fun, joy, and excitement as everyone in the city joins in the celebration. The fiestas generally begin with a parade in which the statue of the saint is carried into the city. After that there could be traditional dances, plays, or rites. As the evening wears on, the tension mounts and more and more firecrackers and rockets explode. Everyone continues to eat, drink and be merry well into the night as longs as the roving musicians, clowns, and happy neighbors remain.

Nicaragua's Celebrations

As is the case in many countries around the world, Nicaragua sees the first day of the year as a reason to celebrate with social gatherings and religious services. The spectacular beaches of Nicaragua are a popular choice for New Year's Day celebrations and the atmosphere is very festive. Independence Day-this annual celebration is in remembrance of Central America's declaration of Independence in 1821. Christmas Day celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ, with festivities including the giving of gifts, religious ceremonies and gathering of family and friends.

A tropical climate can be observed in Nicaragua. Just as in the other Central American countries. Between 72° F at night and 86° F at daytime

Nicaraguan music is a mixture of different cultures from indigenous tribes, European conquerors, and slaves. Styles of music vary throughout the different regions in the country. In the Caribbean coast music with African and indigenous influence are heard, in the Pacific coast the music is considered to be a mixture of the indigenous and Spanish culture and in the North/Central region of Nicaragua the music has more of a European flavor, this is because of the significant wave of Europeans, mostly Germans, that live in the region. European influenced dances like the polka and Mazurka are also danced in this region.
