Introduction

What Is Wind Energy Used For?

Wind energy is renewable and can make electricity which is generated directly from wind.

Wind energy is used for homes, buildings, hospitals, lights and technology, also wind turbines convert kinetic energy in wind into mechanical energy. This mechanical power can be used for specific tasks such as grinding grain or pumping water.

History

Although wind turbines didn't exist, a man named Professor James Blyth built the first ever windmill for electricity on july 1887 Glasgow, Scotland

and powered his home for 25 years.

In addition to this, people have harnessed the energy of the wind.

Wind energy propelled boats along the Nile River as early as 5000 B.C. by 200 B.C.

Glossary

  • Renewable-Can be used more than once.
  • Generated-Produce or create.
  • Turbine-A machine or moter driven by a flow of water/gas/steam.
  • Windmill-A mill worked by the wind by its sail.
  • Blades-A sharp object with sharp edges.
  • Kinetic-Relating to resulting from motion.
  • Shaft-A rod.

  • Convert-To change.
  • Technology-A device from scientific knowledge.
  • Power-Physical strength or force.

How A Wind Turbine Works

Wind turbines work on a simple principla.

Firstly the wind turbine turns the blades.

Then the blades spins the shaft, which connects to the generator.

Finally this motion causes it to produce energy.
