  • To understand these concepts in your micro world, start by listing factors of yourself you see as continuous (e.g. Sense of humour)
  • Expand on this list by looking at continuous aspects of your micro society (e.g. living in the same house)
  • Expand further by thinking about cultural areas of your life that could be regarded as continuous (e.g. Music)
  • Complete the process again for examples of change (self, society, culture)
  • Once you have done this, write a paragraph in response to - Examine the impact of continuity and change in your micro world.

Things in our world are constantly changing. It has often been said that everything changes, the only constant is change, and nothing ever remains the same. One of the things that makes us human is our fascination with change

Understanding continuity and change in the macro world

It is important to remember that while change can sometimes be easily observed, there are also continuities in our society that are equally important.

Macro world continuities are usually refered to as traditions. If something is reffered to as 'traditional', that is really a comment on social and cultural continuity. It may involve a generalisation (think of an example), but it is considered an aspect of life that has continued across generations.

Identifying the nature of social and a continuity and change

Both continuity and change are a normal part of life in both the micro and macro world. The best way to identify these is to learn to recognise specific examples. There are aspects of our life that are basically continuous. This is not to say that no change at all takes place, only that the change is slow and probably unrecognisable.
