Victor Speaks with the Monster

Through a powerful motif in the novel, nature, Victor heals himself from his illness. Him and his friend take walks by lush forests to try and calm Victor. This has a profound effect on Victor. it lets him see the beauty in life and forget about the horror he had witnessed on that stormy night.

There is an obvious reason as why Victor creating the creature is the most important event in the novel. Without the creature, the novel would have no conflict. Victor creates the creature out of body parts that he unearths from graveyards. Harnessing the power of electricity, he brings the creature to life. Upon seeing the creature's milky eyes, he regrets even thinking about creating him

Justine confesses to murdering William. The locket that was on William was in one of her coats. Elizabeth talks to Justine, and Justine tells her that she did not murder William but feels like she is responsible for his death because she was not watching him when it had happened. She is hanged. Now Victor feels that the blood of William and Justine is on his hands because he created the being that made this mess.

When the creature approached Victor, Victor was ready to kill the monster with his bare hands. All the monster wanted to do was talk. He spoke very proper old English. Victor agrees to sit with the monster and hear his tale. The monster tells of his conflicts with humans, his survival, and how he murdered William. When he is done talking, he ask something of Victor.

When Victor's Mother falls ill from Scarlet Fever, which she had contracted from Elizabeth, she passes away. This has a profound effect on Victor. She becomes obsessed with death and wants to try to give life to something that is not alive. He gets his theory from when he saw lightning hit a tree. He thinks the only way he can achieve this, is by going to get a higher education.

Victor Falls Ill

When Victor and his entire family go to the vacation home, Victor become suicidal. The only reason he dose not go through with killing himself is because he feels like his family needs him emotionally, especially Elizabeth. He starts taking walks near the home. He again heals himself through the power of nature. He becomes less depressed at the deaths in the family. Until he sees the monster again.

As soon as Victor's spirits are up, his brother William is found dead in a forest. Someone had strangled the boy and stolen his precious locket. Victor goes over to see he sight on which he was murdered. There, he sees the figure of the monster looming over him. This is where Victor swears to kill the monster the next chance he gets. Even though Victor knows it was the monster who killed William, a family friend, Justine, is convicted of the crime.

After the creature escaped from Victor into the wild, he falls ill with a "fever". These symptoms are more mental than physical. He seems to almost have depression after he creates the monster. Elizabeth write to him, worrying about his health. Only his friend Henry is there to help him. Victor can't look at any scientific tools because it reminds him of the horror he ha created

Victor going of to the university was a major turning point in the story. It is where he found the tools he needed to create the monster. His teachers let him know that he should study chemistry and anatomy rather than natural philosophy. If he was not grief stricken by his mother's death when he departed for the school, he would of never had created the creature.

When the monster asked Victor to create a wife for him, Victor immediately denied. Then the monster persuaded Victor by saying that he and his wife will leave Victor alone. Victor sees this as the best way of getting rid of the monster because the monster can not be killed easily. So he agrees to create the monster's bride. He soon however, regrets making the promise, and breaking it.
