Events That Are Collapsing Mexico City
Climate Change
Because of the city's poor supervision of containing pollution, the city has been experiencing droughts and extreme heat. Due to these actions, it is harder for citizens to adapt to the new changes in the environment. Not only are the people affected, plants and animals are affected as well.
Hostile Neighbors
In general, Mexico City does not experience hostile neighbors. However, Mexico as a country would. Mexico has only one main hostile neighbor, the United States. The United States would be considered a potential hostile neighbor because of all the smuggling operations entering the United States. Smuggling would include drugs, guns, and mexican citizens. If the smuggling problem continues, a war could break out between Mexico and the United States
Collapse Of Trading Partners
Mexico City produces many products that are shipped worldwide. However, Mexico City runs into one major problem, China. China has a much larger export rate than Mexico and they can produce their products much cheaper. This would defeat the trade routes In Mexico City.
Environmental Problems / Natural Disasters
In 1993, Mexico City was the most polluted city in the world. In 2010, Mexico City was ranked #4. But still, the city is highly polluted. Mexico City is so polluted that they canceled schools for days in a row until the harmful smog vanished. Because pollution is still occurring, it is getting harder and harder to grow crops, raise cattle, and to even live normal life. Billions of dollars are being spent each year to prevent more pollution.
Mexico is located over an active tectonic plate that causes many earthquakes. In 1985, Mexico City experienced a very fatal Earthquake with a magnitude of 8.1 . This Earthquake destroyed many hospitals, industries, and also caused more than 10,000 deaths. The earthquake was so massive, that they are still cleaning up the area.
Political, Social, and Economic Issues
Political Issues:
-Bankruptcy in major industries
-Job cuts to over 200,000 people
-45% currently living in poverty
-Political race for Mayor
Social Issues:
-Crime rates tripled in the past 10 years
-Drug war
-Unsafe areas
-Limited housing
Mexico City is experiencing economic problems. Most of their industrial companies are moving overseas. They are moving because it is much cheaper to make the product somewhere else and most industries are tired of receiving fines from the government. Many people are losing their jobs because of this. Billions of dollars from the Mexican Government are spent yearly to find a solution to the pollution problem.
Deforestation and Habitat Destruction
In The past years, there has been a rapid increase in population in Mexico City. In 1900, the population was estimated at 350,000. Eighty years later (1980) 15,000,000 people live in the city. Due to this huge increase of citizens, more Buildings needed to be created, leading to deforestation. Deforestation leads to the destruction of many native species living in the area.
Soil Problems
A famous saying would include, "What ever goes up must come down." Mexico City is known for it's great industries and factories. When these factories produce smog and it is released into the air, the smog then turns into a liquid form such as acid rain. The acid rain falls down on native crops and then drains into the soil. This causes the soil to become polluted.
Pollution in General / Water Management
Because Mexico City is overpopulated, much of the population drives gas powered vehicles and work in industrial factories. These forms of transportation and work cause a nitrous carbon compound called smog. When smog is released into the air it can cause many problems. People, plants, and animals breathe the air in, making them very ill or close to death.
Mexico City has many problems with water in general. City water poses many difficulties for the population ranging from conservation to transportation. Mexico City has always faced a problem with city water. Most of the water comes from underground wells.
-Bad water mixing with fresh, clean water
-Source of the water
-Supply for millions of citizens
-Not enough filtration
Overhunting / Overfishing
Mexico City does not experience any problems with over hunting and fishing. Most of the City's national parks are protected and guarded 24/7. There is not a prize "Game" animal to hunt and fish for. Over fishing is not a problem either due to the fact that people are not able to fish in restricted areas.
Effects From "Invasive Species"
Invasive species that are affecting the area of Mexico City would include the Asian Carp and the African Tilapia. These species were introduced into Mexico City to give more game to the anglers. The growing population of these invasive species caused many native populations to plummet to the point of being considered endangered. An example of an affected species would be the Axolotls (Native Salamander).
Over-Population
Currently 30 Million People are living in Mexico City and it is believed to be more than 40 million by 2040. In order to house all these people, houses and buildings will need to be built, leading to deforestation. Disease can spread much easier because of the amount of people in a small, confined space.
Conclusion Statement
-more money to fund ways to prevent pollution
-create laws preventing large amounts of pollution
-heavily fine industries
-introduce more economic ways of transportation
-offer more jobs to citizens
-provide health care for all citizens
-more funding to water companies
-Use federal money to encourage green sources of energy
