Loyalty in Macbeth

By Melany Sierra

"Our duties are to your throne and state" 1.4.25

"So I lose none in seeking to augment it, but still keep my bosom franchis'd and alligiance clear I shall be caunsell'd" Banquo, 2.1.27-30

"The service and loyalty I owe, in doing so, pays itself" Macbeth, 1.4.22-23

here Macbeth swears loyalty to the King once more, saying that it is his duty to protect the king's honor, love and state.

this is ironic because Macbeth's loyalty to Duncan starts to become more of an illusion rather than reality.

Banquo is telling Macbeth that he wants to stay loyal to the king and that he has no interest in the witches' predictions. even though it was predicted that it would be Banquo's sons to be kings, he has no desire in gaining status and joining forces with Macbeth and following his advice.

this foreshadows Banquo's loyalty to Macbeth as the King as well. "Let your higness command apon me" 3.1.16-17, although Banquo is suspicious about Macbeth's behavior, he still stays loyal to him. this reveals a lot about Banquo's character, showing that his duty is to serve the king.

this quote is trying to say that Loyalty is its own reward. shakespeare is showing us that loyalty is key in the play. Macbeth has been given the Title of Thane of Cawdor due to HIS loyalty to the king, which is something Duncan values. unfortunately, no matter how loyal macbeth is at the beginning, it is all about to change when macbeth starts to listen to his ambitions rather than the loyalty he owes the King.

"Macduff, this noble passion, child of integrity" Malcolm 4.3.114-115

"let us rather hold fast the mortal sword and like good men bestride our downfall birthdom" Macduff, 4.3.2-4

Here Macduff is trying to prove his loyalty to a very suspicious Malcolm. He is saying he is ready to fight by his side in order to restore peace in Scotland.

Malcolm has just tested macduff's loyalty. he realized that even though he portrayed himself as a terrible king ready to spend the country's money and go chasing after women the entire time, macduff would still be by his side because it was the right thing to do since he is afterall the rightful king. he believes that Macduff really cares about Scotland.
