Cognitive Styles

Field-Dependent

Field- Independence

These people are more aware than field-dependent people of how they process information. They can perceive the separate parts of a pattern and can analyse the components, rather than only concentrate on the whole.

Behaviours and Characteristics:

1. Not as accustomed to social relationships as field-dependent people are

2. Do better in maths and science because their analytical abilities give them an advantage.

People who are considered this cognitive style often perceive patterns as a whole and do not focus on seperate elements from a total visual field.

Behaviours and Characteristics:

1. Difficulty focusing on one part of a situation

2. Difficulty picking out important details or analysing different parts of a pattern

3. Work well in a group situation

4. Enjoy subjects such as literature and history

Reflective

Impulsive

Students who are impulsive tend to work very quickly and may make many mistakes.

Behaviours and Characteristics:

1. Work may not be as accurate as reflective students work

2. May rush through work and assignments, resulting in them missing the correct answers

3. May not consider alternative answers to open-ended questions

These students work more slowly than impulsive students and therefore make less mistakes.

Behaviours and characteristics:

1. Take more time and care when doing work

2. Students who are more relfective can improve their reading abilities and performance on other school tasks

3. More analytical than impulse students in their approach to problem solving
