Lost by Carl Sandburg

Theme

Title

There is always hope in dark times

Poem

Revisiting the title after reading the poem, we concluded:

Shift

Attitude

5

Cold and Dreary

Staying hopeless like an idle turtle on its back.

The somber and sober rain stirs

Grey, dreary, muggy, and dark

The sun still shines behind the clouds,

Being a symbol of ambition

Finding myself throughout

It maybe cold and dreary

But the light from the sun shines through.

  • The character is lost within himself
  • He is desolate and doesnt know what to do
  • The poem is very dark and alone

Connotation cont.

The shift starts on line 6, where the subject changes from talking about a boat to it being compared to a child.

Connotation

"Like some lost child"- Simile

"In tears and trouble

Hunting the harbor's breast

And the harbor's eyes."- Metaphor

The tone and mood in this story makes the reader feel "Desolate and Lonely" as it states in the poem.

The diction in this poem creates a feeling of desperation. The mist "creeps" up on the boat as it "calls and cries unendingly." It's like there is no chance for the boat and it'll never be found.

The author uses a simile to compare the calls and cries of the boat to a child who is lost and misses home which is the harbor in this situation.

The author uses this alliteration to attract people to continue reading on. He could’ve also used this to give the poem a more lyrical feel.

"Desolate and lone

All night long on the lake"- Alliteration

"Where fog trails and mist creeps,"-Personification

Sandburg used a metaphor for the harbor's eyes, which can be compared to a lighthouse.

Paraphrase

Connotation cont.

"Where fog trails and mist creeps,"-Imagery

He uses personification to emphasize and to give the reader a description of how the fog and mist is moving across the lake.

The author uses imagery to create a vivid image of how lonely the harbor is.

"The whistle of a boat

Calls and cries unendingly,"-Consonance

Desolate and lone

All night long on the lake

Where fog trails and mist creeps

The author uses "S" as consonance in the poem to lose it's lyrical feel and add a hasher feel to it.

The lake is desolate and lone.

Fog trails and mist creeps

The whistle of a boat

Calls and cries unendingly

Like some lost child

Title

The boat constantly whistle, cries, and calls like a child

In tears and trouble

Hunting the harbor's breast

And the harbor's eyes

During hardships, hunting the harbor's breast and eyes

Based off the title we concluded:

  • That it'll be about loneliness
  • Someone lost within themselves
  • The tone will be very sad/dark
