To Kill A Mockingbird- Chapter 17

By: Tyler and Julia

The Court case

Questions

The class will be split up into two teams. Since the main idea of our chapter is about the court case were going to turn this class into a courtroom. We will be the two lawyers. I’m going to be Atticus and Julia will be Mr.Gilmer. We are going to call up one person from each team and question them about the chapter and whichever team gets the most questions correct wins the trial!

1) What evidence did Atticus find about Bob Ewell that made him look guilty for Tom Robinson’s alleged offense?

2) What do we second-handedly learn about life at the Ewell’s home?

3) Who was Mr.Gilmer?

Theme

4) What do you learn from Bob Ewell’s evidence?

The theme of this chapter is prejudice because

Tom Robinson is accused of raping Bob Ewells

daughter even though it may of been Bob that did it. People just assume it was Tom because

he's black. Also people already know that Tom

won't win the case because he's black, there for he has no chance even though he's innocent.

The Court Case

Literary Devices

Quotes

This is a photograph of Atticus and Tom Robinson during the court case.

Mr.Ewell says: “I seen that black nigger yonder ruttin’ on my Mayella!”

After Bob Ewell stated this in trial, it made him look extremely racist as he chose Toms race over everything else about him to conclude his judgments.

Mr.Ewell says: "I most positively am not, I can use one hand good as the other. One hand good as the other..."

Bob really emphasized his ignorance after replying with that statement towards Atticus after being asked to write his name down.

Judge Taylor says” “You’re left-handed Mr.Ewell”

After Atticus pointed out the probability of a left-handed person aiming for the right side of a persons face is highly likely, it caught the jury’s attention. This brought out the new evidence of Ewell being left-handed.

Allusion

Definition:

An allusion is a figure of speech whereby the author refers to a subject matter such as a place, event, or literary work by way of a passing reference. It is up to the reader to make a connection to the subject being mentioned.

"If her right eye was blackened and she was beaten mostly on the right side of the face, it would tend to show that a left-handed person did it. Sherlock Holmes and Jem Finch would agree.”

Chapter 17 page 178. This is an example of allusion because Atticus refers back to what Mr. Ewell previously said about his daughter’s injuries and then Atticus restates that Mr.Ewell is a left handed person and explains why it has to do with the case.

Metaphor:

Definition: One thing is compared to be like another as to draw attention to their differences or similarities. “

"... His chest swerved, and once more he was a red little rooster.”

Chapter 17 page 176. This is an example of a metaphor because Mr.Ewell was compared to a red little rooster.

Irony:

Definition:

The use of words to convey a meaning that is the opposite of its literal meaning

"Maycomb's Ewells lived behind the town garbage dump in what was once a Negro cabin....Its windows were merely open spaces in the walls, which in the summertime were covered with greasy strips of cheesecloth to keep out the varmints that feasted on Maycomb's refuse."

Chapter 17 page 170. This quote is ironic because Mr.Ewell is known as poor white trash in Maycomb and he lives in junkyard.

Characters

Plot

New characters

Mr. Gilmer-

  • He is a lawyer from Abbotsville that presents prosecution against Tom Robinson.

Robert E. Lee Ewell-

  • He is the father of the victim of Tom’s rape. He is presented as a poor white man that is known as a disgrace of Maycomb for three generations. He cares very little about his wife and kids and spends most of his money on himself.

Some of the other characters featured in chapter 17 are:

• Atticus

• Jem

• Scout

• Mr. Heck Tate

• Judge Taylor

• Tom Robinson

• Dill

• Reverend Sykes

In this chapter you get to see what Atticus is really like as a lawyer. He shows great pride in what he does and doesn’t give up until he gets the truth out of Mr. Ewell. Atticus is very firm with his questions and knows exactly what he’s doing.

Jem and Scout are both very interested in this case and are excited to see their father at work. They enjoy watching him because it makes them proud to see their father as a lawyer and man that won’t stop fighting for what he believes in.

The rest of the characters in this chapter are all just supporting characters and don’t have much of a role. Mr.Heck Tate gives his testimony of what happened that night, Judge Taylor is there to decide if Tom is guilty or not, Tom doesn’t say much because he doesn’t want to open his mouth and get himself in more trouble and Dill and Reverend Sykes are just there to watch the trial like everyone else in Maycomb.

During the trial Mr. Gilmer, the prosecutor, questioned Heck Tate and depicted him about the night of November 21st. Tate was aided by Bob Ewell to go to the Ewell home. Shortly after, Bob Ewell had confessed to Tate about his daughter being raped. After he had arrived, he found Ewell’s daughter, Mayella, bruised and beaten. She told Tate that Tom Robinson had raped her. Tate finds Robinson and turns him in after Mayella identified him as the one. The witness, who admitted that no doctor was called up, and that Mayella’s bruises were more potent on the right side of her face to Attitcus, he then decided to investigate him. Bob Ewell is called to the stand as soon as Tate left.

Ewell and his children live in a tin-roofed cabin with a yard full of trash, the only formal part of the yard is in the corner where there are presentable flowers planted. Although, it is said that they were planted and taken care of by Mayella. The Ewell family lives their lives behind the town garbage dump. Ewell testifies, with a rude attitude, which the night that everyone is questioning, he was only coming out of the woods with loads of firewood. It was only then when Bob heard his daughter yelling. When he had finally reached his house, he had seen Tom Robinson raping his daughter through the window. When Robinson noticed Ewell’s arrival, he bolted. Ewell finally entered the house, and saw that Mayella was all right. Bob urgently ran to the sheriff’s. Atticus’s investigation is blunt, he asked Bob Ewell the following question: Why was no doctor called? Ewell stated there was no need and added that it was too expensive. Atticus had Ewell write his name down. The jury observed that Bob is left-handed. The jury came to a conclusion that a left-handed person is more likely to leave bruises on the right side of a persons face.
