PIAGET CONSERVATION (MASS & WEIGHT)

1. CHRISTIAN'S STAGE OF COGNITIVE DEVELOPMENT:

Christian is in the Preoperatinoanl stage (specifically in the preconceptual period) of cognitive development because he is not able to perform mental operations such as understanding that the two balls of play-dough are the same amount regardless of the shape I change them into.

2. WHAT CAN I TAKE AWAY FROM THIS EXPERINCE TO GUIDE MY TEACHING?

I need to keep in mind that my future students will all most likely be in the preoperational stage. Therefore, I need to give them plenty of time for experimentation in the classroom. I need to give them materials that they can manipulate and discover. I also need to challenge their critical thinking skills by asking "why?" or "how?" often.

3. WHAT CAN I DO TO HELP STUDENTS TRANSITION TO THE NEXT STAGE?

  • Encourage locial and operational thought though different activites
  • Seriation Activites (size order)
  • Reversibility (numbers and objects can go back to original state)
  • Class inclusion
