ABC's of Biology

Bailey Drummond and Alec Lee

W- Water Cycle

The process of water circulates between the earth's oceans, atmosphere, and land

S-Solution

A mixture ingredients that are distributed in a way that they are hard to separate

X- X linked Chromosome

A sex chromosome in mammals that typically occurs in two in females and one in males

Y- Y chromosome

A sex chromosome that is characteristic of male cells in species in which the male typically has two unlike sex chromosomes

Z- Zero population growth

The maintenance of a population at a constant level by limiting the number of live births to only what is needed to replace the existing population.

T- Thylakoid

A sac like membrane that contains the chlorophyll in cyanobacteria and in the chloroplasts of plant cells and green algae.

U- Unicellular

Unicellular organisms are composed of a single cell, unlike multicellular organisms that are made of many cells.

V- Viruses

An infective agent that typically consists of a nucleic acid molecule in a protein coat, is too small to be seen by light microscopy, and is able to multiply only within the living cells of a host.

K- Karyotype

A chart that shows the chromosomes in an organism in order of size

A-Active Transport

L-Lamarck

the movement of ions or molecules across a cell membrane from low concentration to high concentration; uses energy

pioneer French biologist who is best known for his idea that acquired characters are inheritable, an idea known as Lamarckism

M- Monomer

a molecule that can be bonded to other identical molecules to form a polymer

N-Nucleus

An organelle found in eukaryotic cells. It contains the majority of the cell's genetic material.

O- Okazaki Fragments

New pieces of DNA that are attached to old pieces of DNA in sections (called the lagging strand), to form two new strands of DNA

P- Protein

A molecule composed of polymers of amino acids joined together by peptide bonds.

Q- Quantitative

Measuring by the quantity of something rather than its quality

R- Restriction Enzyme

An enzyme produced chiefly by certain bacteria, having the property of cleaving DNA molecules at or near a specific sequence of bases.

B- Biodiversity

the variety of life in the world or in a particular habitat or ecosystem.

C-Carbon Cycle

The process of how Carbon flows through Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration

E- Emigration

The process of animals or human leaving their home to go to a different place permanently

F- Fermentation

The process that consumes sugar when Oxygen isn't present, creating organic acids, gases, and/or alcohol

D- Darwin

I- Interphase

A British naturalist of the nineteenth century. He and others developed the theory of evolution. This theory forms the basis for the modern life sciences.

the resting phase between successive mitotic divisions of a cell, or between the first and second divisions of meiosis.

J- Junk DNA

A piece of DNA that does not code for proteins

G- Gametes

Gametes are the cells used during sexual reproduction to produce a new individual organism or zygote

H- Hypothesis

A guess on what the outcome of an experiment will be
