ATTACK!! 10th Century Scottish Weaponry

The Viking Sword

The Pictish Buckler

Weaponry from the time is relevant to the story of Macbeth because throughout the majority of the story, combat takes place between different parties, and these weapons are used to cause the pain and death in the story.

The Viking Sword

The Pictish Buckler

  • Used by the Pictish people (what a surprise), this small buckler was the most common shield used in Scottland
  • It is made using Oak wood covered in embossed leather. The inside includes a bronze plate as additional protection
  • They often had depictions of animals
  • The viking sword, a large, often double edged sword, was the main combat tool of the era
  • The blade was made of iron, with a central groove running all its length
  • The bronze pommel depicted a symbol from Norse mythology.
  • These swords are found in large quantities on the scottish islands, an area that used to have a large viking influence

Purpose

The Carynx

Weapons were used back then not only as a tool of war, but also as a means of self defence.

  • A simple bronze trumpet with a mouthpiece and extended bellmouth shaped like an animal head. The lower jaw of the "animal" was jointed to give the effect of a real animal enemy.
  • It was a well established war trumpet used during formal skirmishes and raids.
