Transcendentalism Today

The Outsiders - S.E. Hinton

"They grew up on the outside of society. They weren't looking for a fight. They were looking to belong,"(S.E. Hinton, The Outsiders).

Nonconformity is when you are not conforming to the likes of society, or when society and everyone else goes one way and you decide to go another. This quote from the novel "The Outsiders" relates to nonconformity because it is basically saying that the characters in the story were trying to conform to society and be like everyone else or trying to fit in would be a better way to put it. The book itself is about this boy who wants to be like everyone else in the group of boys that he hangs out with, and most people are telling to be himself and that he doesn't have to be like them. So, the whole book could really be said to be built on nonconformity as a whole.

Emerson : The King of Transcendentalism

Ralph Waldo Emerson has been named really the king of transcendentalism. By his works such as Nature and Self-Reliance , others have been able to understand his meanings of transcendentalism better. Now transcendentalism is a way of life or thought that emphasizes nature and goes against society because society corrupts us. Under transcendentalism there is five major tenets that describe different things or different ways: Nonconformity, self-reliance, confidence, importance of nature and free thought. " To go into solitude, a man needs to retire as much from his chamber as from society,"(Nature 206). An example of nonconformity from Emerson's work Nature.
