Four Types of Appeals

Arguments from the Heart

Arguments from Values

Axiological Arguments

Arguments based on character

Arguments based on facts and reason

How does a specific emotion generate support for the claim a writer makes?

For example, a drunk driving commercial makes the viewer fear death, injury or arrest.

Good use of Emotional Appeal

Logical appeals rely heavily on data and information from reliable sources.

These arguments are based on groups of people as small as families and as large as nations. They do one of two things:

1.Ask others to live up to higher principles or even new values

2. Complain that they have not done so.

*Does the writer have authority to write on this subject?

*Are claims qualified reasonably?

*Are objections acknowledged and addressed?

*Are sources documented?

Now, include these ideas in your writing!

There are universal human values and ideals: things like goodness, beauty, truth, justice, etc.

This summer we discussed Atticus Finch!
