Derivational morphemes

We use derivational morphemes to move or to make new words of a different grammatical category from the stem.

Example :

1. "..ess" = add to word kind changes it to "kindness".

2. "..ly" = kind to kindly

Infectional morphemes

We use infectional morphemes to indicate aspects of grammatical function of a word. They are used to show if word is plural/ singular, past/ present tense, comparative/ possessive form.

4 infections attached to verbs :

1. -s = 3rd person singular -> runs

2. -ing = present participle -> fishing

3. -ed = past tense -> loved

4. -en = past participle -> proven

2 Inflectional attached to adjectives :

1. -er = comparative -> Smarter

2. -est = superlative -> Smartest

2. s = plural -> books

All language have words and morphemes. A morphemes is the smallest unit of meaning or function within language.

Example : and, but, when, where,above, in, the.

These words are rarely added to the language, so they are a "close" class of words

what is Morphology?

Lexical morphemes

It is a kind of word formation, involving a creation of a new word class from an existing word without any change in form which cannot be divided or analyzed.

is a ordinary nouns, adjectives and verbs that carry the "content" of the massage we convey.

example :

- Girl

- Man

- Yellow

- Sad

- Grape

These words can be added to the language easily, so they are an open class of words.
