Characters, Plot, & Setting

"...she just asks us to consider where he came from and to question the ingrained prejudice of a legal system..." (Stasio, New York Times Company).

“'The 57 Bus' will leave you with a hole in your heart and tears running down your cheeks. For a book about a horrible crime, the amount of love is remarkable" (Gerny, The Daily Californian).

Possible Opposition

Sasha Fleischman

The 57 Bus details life from two very different teenagers from two different parts of Oakland, California. However, an encounter on an eight minute bus ride changed the lives of both teens forever. One reckless act left Sasha severely burned and Richard charged with two hate crimes.

Violence: Richard's crime plagued past is heavily detailed. Slater also graphically describes the scene where Richard lights Sasha's skirt on fire.

Education: The reader is taught the different sexuality, gender, and romance types.

Language: There is conversational swearing by the teens throughout the book.
