When he said this, his brother knew how dependent Doodle was on him. The brother was ashamed/ tired of taking Doodle everywhere in the go-cart, so he would teach Doodle to walk. Standing him up hundreds of times a day at Old Woman swamp, and on they kept it secret until the chosen day they told everyone.

The author was foreshadowing when he has the ibis die on the lawn. When Doodle is kneeling next to it it shows his appreciation for nature/ beauty and feel he needs to bury it.

The brother sets out to find Doodle, and see's him propped up under a tree, with his knees in his face. He pulls his brother up and see's Doodle's neck long and thin, he was covered in blood. It resembled the death of the scarlet ibis on the lawn. The brother now blames himself and realizes how cruel he was to Doodle. He felt he should have been delicate with him, like the doctor said. The brother's lack of understanding led to Doodle's death.

The Scarlet Ibis

The storm is coming...

Doodle and the brother are down at Horsehead Landing when the storm started to gather, and he was walking home. He was somewhat irritated, having Doodle practically walking on his heels, so he picked up his pace and soon broke into a full sprint home. Doodle was struggling but the brother kept running, running away leaving Doodle. Hearing Doodle saying, "don't leave me." The brother was being selfish and cruel. He had hope that his brother was not far behind but when he was too tired to run any longer, he checked off in the distance for Doodle, but he was not in sight.

When the brother decided to show Doodle his casket, he told Doodle to touch it, and he begged not to. He said he'd leave him up there, which showed how cruel he was to Doodle at times. When the owl flew out of the casket, Doodle was paralyzed with fear and Said, "don't leave me."

Doodle starts to cry when the brother brings him to Old Woman swamp because it is so "pretty." Doodle is sensitive and appreciates life/ nature.

plot analysis/ symbolism

Doodle had no future of living, He wasn't expected to stay alive more than a week. He starts to hold himself up on the bed and can crawl.

Thesis: The brother's helpful intentions, teaching Doodle to walk, run, swim, and row the boat, were to protect the brother's pride. He was embarrassed of Doodle, and lacked the gentleness Doodle needed, which led to his tragic death.
