This sculpture represents the fault in the american society in the late 20th century.
It was sculpted by Duane Hanson, a american who not only sought to show the political unrest of his time and criticize consumerism. But also to demonstrate people with modest lives who were often considered as "invisible".
It is made of synthetic resin and fiberglass, Duane's signature for his creations.
Due to the material he used for his works, Hanson died of cancer in 1996 when he was 71 years of age.
The scene takes place behind a supermarket parallel to a busy street.
The sculpture is in plain view of all the people passing by to elicitate a reaction of these people.
The sculpture is realistic, even more so due the synthetic resin and the fiberglass.
The artist wants to denounce the flaw in the social order of American in his time; racism. At that time, it was considered normal that black people received beatings. Even police men, who are supposed to stop all violence, join in on these beatings. Duane Hanson wanted society to realize what was really at stake. And only in 1999 was racism abolished, so Hanson never got to see it happen.
This sculpture is interesting for us because it is not just a work created from imagination but something that really happened before. It was based on cold hard facts.
This represents something that was going on for generations and only recently was abolished.
An other dark-skinned man is in a fist fight with another citizen, while another dark-skinned man is holding a meat cleaver and seems to be thinking of his next victim.
The officer is holding a bat and is beating an african who is curled in a ball on the ground in a way to protect himself.
An other african is being suffocated by a simple citizen with what seems to be a crowbar or just a stick.
In this sculpture, we notice a fight between african-americans and americans. One of the latter being a police officer. We can't really distinguish their faces but all caracters are male.
