The Synagogue (Cont.)

  • The Synagogue at Capernaum was a place of extreme importance to the city, and held the history of Jesus' teachings, e.g. John 6:51-69

-The ruins still include much of the original building left standing as it was made more sturdy than buildings during that time

Peter's House

  • The believed house of Saint Peter can be found in the city of Capernaum, between the synagogue (about 2 blocks away) and the lake shore.

-This is strongly believed to be the house of Peter because of the location and clues from within the Bible, but graffiti of the name "Peter" is also claimed to be found.

The Synagogue

The Synagogue at Capernaum is not only among the oldest Synagogues of the world, but also was regularly attended by and ministered in by Jesus

  • There now stands a memorial over the house where one can stand over the ruins.

Introduction

  • Capernaum was a fishing village on the North-west shore of the Sea of Galilee
  • Capernaum was inhabitated between the years of 2nd century B.C. and 11th century A.D., and the city held a population of about 1,500.
  • The city was established during the time of the Hasmoneans, a dynasty taking place during the end of the Hellenistic period and culture.

Archeology

  • The layout of the city was quite common for its time, as the stone walls surrounding the city, and roofs of houses were mainly reinforced with mud instead of Mortar.

-The houses improved in structure and sturdiness around the 4th century B.C. when they began using mortar.

  • Ancient tools such as the "Olive press" (pictured above) can still be found in the city today and played an important part in the trading aspect of the ancient city long ago.
