Runaway by Norman Rockwell

Created by: Maggie Crosby

Space:

The space around the focal point is very light and simplistic. I think this helps get the point across to the viewer.

Rhythm:

Direction:

Direction &

Rhythm

The lines of the walls, counter top, and stools all direct the viewer's eyes to the figures.

The repeating vertical lines on and the thick grey horizontal lines creates a rule of thirds grid pointing the viewer to the subjects.

Value & Texture

Shape:

The shape that draws the viewer's eye to the main focus point is this triangular formation that connects the officer and waiter's eyes on the boy.

Value:

Point:

The point of focus is on the boys head/eyes. Everything directs the viewer's eyes to that conversation focused around the boy.

Texture:

The value of this painting is very light. Everything surrounding the three figures is very light. While the value around the officer and the boy is a little darker.

I would say this painting has an implied texture. The texture on the objects, figures, and walls can be implied by the techniques Rockwell used to create the image.

Color & Unity

Line:

Color:

Unity:

The soft colors on the boys face & clothing implies innocence to the cultural concerns of the world. The darker blues and blacks on the officer shows maturity. He has seen more & experienced more which allows him to have a larger perspective of the world compared to the boy.

The color provides the unity for this painting. The balance of color creates a visually pleasing image for the viewer.

The background colors are very cool which allows the warm colors to stand out.

I see an implied line going from the officer's eyes to the boy's eyes. As well as the waiter's eyes to the boy.

Balance:

The line of the counter top is also a big line to focus on. It sort of gives a base foundation for all the glances.

This is a very balanced painting. Even though it has contrasting elements those elements contribute to the overall balance of the piece.

The background is not to busy so the focus is still on the figures. The tilt of the heads, the triangular shape of the figures and so much more helps keep this painting balanced.

Balance & Proportion

Proportion:

The size of the figures is what sticks out to me when it comes to proportion. Their sizes help create a sense of space.

Form & Content

Form:

Content:

This piece is one of Rockwell's humorous paintings depicting simple scenes of everyday life.

The content of Rockwell's Runaway depicts a young boy that has runaway from home. The painting allows the viewer to see the police officer & waiter with open ears to hear the boy out, but then help him relies that his problems are not as big as they seem.

Contrast & Emphasis

Contrast:

The 2 main contrasting elements of this painting are the color and the scale of things.

The value of light and dark colors create a contrast.

The contrasting scale of the boy to the officer and the objects in the background creates diversity throughout the painting.

Emphasis:

The emphasis of this painting is on the boy and the police officer because of its placement in the image and contrasting colors.
