Newton's Laws of Motion

Who is Sir Issac Newton?

General Information:

Sir Issac Newton was born around December 25, 1642 in Woolsthorpe, Lincolnshire, England. His real birth date could be not exact considering the fact he was alive more than 200 years ago. Newton was a physicist and mathematician, which was described in his day as a "natural philosopher." He is one of the most commonly known scientists to ever walk the earth and provided huge help to the scientific revolution. He is very famous for of course, his three Law's of Motion which is something kids learn aross the world each day.

Historians believe that this is where Issac Newton was raised.

What did he do?

Sir Issac Newton is most commonly known for his research and development of the three Laws of Motion. In Physics he is widely considered to be the most influential physicist of all time. In optics he showed white light can be split into colors and recombined into white light and improved the reflecting telescope. In mechanics he was able to explain the motion of the planets in terms of 3 laws of motion (now known as Newton's Laws) and a universal theory of gravity.

This is Newton's first telescope, the one he deigned and created. It used a simple concave mirror mounted inside.

What are some of his discoveries and inventions?

Newton's Three Laws of Motion will be described in greater detail in the following slides.

As I said above this is Newton's first telescope, it was very advanced for its time but it is far from the telescopes of today. This one only uses a small concave mirror while the ones today use more powerful, more accurate ones.

This object to the right is Newtons cradle, this is probably the most used example of all Newton's laws, but of the 3rd law is probably mostly shown. When the first ball is released there is an equal reaction on the second ball which continues to the third and so on.

Newton found out that when white light is shown through a prism the light would split into all of the colors in the spectrum, as shown on the left. This discovery has changed the way we live, as with many of his discoveries.

A short wrap up!

Newton's laws are something that people have experienced since the beginning of time and will experience til the en of time. Everywhere you look you will see the laws that Sir Issac Newton made so clear to us. So now, when you go play that soccer game and you kick the ball, don't just think about scoring, think about Newton's Law's of Motion!

Go Newton's Laws!

Newtons Three Laws of Motion

Newton's third law

Newton's third law stated that for every action there is an equal but opposite reaction. This is a law that we encounter in our daily lives, one that you don't even know is happening. An example of this is when a fire fighter uses a hose and gets blown backwards. There is force from the water and hose to the ground and force from the ground to the hose, which makes him fly backward.

Newton's second law:

Newton's second law states that if more force is applied to an object then that object will have more acceleration. The same with mass. An example of this would be, if you through a ball in the air with more force then it will go much higher than if you were to through it with less.

Newtons first law:

Newtons first law states that an object at rest stays at rest and an object in motion stays in motion with the same speed and in the same direction unless acted upon by an unbalanced force. Kicking a soccer ball is a great example of Newtons first law. The soccer ball was at rest before it was kicked and then continues to move until the grass or whatever type of ground is under it.
