Treatment of Citizens

Relationship with the US

The U.S had invaded Puerto

Rico all while promising to protect life, freedom, and property of the Puerto Ricans.

They also disrupted Puerto Rico

coffee industry and implemented a sugar one, which lead Puerto Rico into poverty.

Puerto Ricans weren’t treated very well, they couldn't vote and didn’t have any legal standing in the U.S. system until 1917. Additionally, they were also deployed as troops during World War I.

Territory

Puerto Rico was a strategic

location the United States could use for a military base, sugar market and a refueling location.

It was under American

control mid-August during the Spanish-American war and was officially theirs in December after the Treaty of Paris was signed.

Independence

  • Puerto Rico was claimed by Spain over 500 years ago.

  • A nationalist movement in Puerto Rico was inspired shortly after French Revolution.

  • In 1868, Puerto Rican nationalists launched a series of revolts that persuaded Spain to grant the island a small amount of autonomy. few months later, the US claimed Puerto Rico during the Spanish-American War.

  • Puerto Rico never gained independence from the United States. But they were given a constitution and voting rights.
