Jackie Robinson

Career

  • In 1942, Robinson joined the United States Army.
  • He discharged from the Army in 1944 to play baseball.
  • He became the first black player in American Major League baseball in 1947 when he joined the Brooklyn Dodgers.
  • He helped the Dodgers win six National League pennants.
  • He helped defeat the New York Yankees in the 1955 World Series.
  • Retired from the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1957 when they traded him to the New York Giants.

  • Won the Spingram Medal in 1956.
  • Elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1967.
  • Arrested and court-martialed after refusing to give up his seat and move to the back of the bus when ordered to by the driver.
  • Died on October 24, 1972 from complications from heart problems and diabetes.
  • Survived by wife, Rachel Robinson, and two of their three children.
