Morris Travers

The Discovery!

1898

  • Neon was discovered by William Ramsay and Morris Travers
  • Ramsay and Travers found Argon and Helium First
  • Ramsay wondered, maybe the element is hidden in Ar?
  • Ramsay and Travers froze a sample of Ar using fractional distillation
  • To obtain the gas's spectrum, Travers applied a high voltage to the gas in a vacuum tube
  • Also helped the discovery of Krypton

These guys are, like, Really smart -->

Conclusion

Neon is acquired by fractional distillation. It can be used in Signs, HeNe Lasers, and some other industrial uses. Neon also has this pretty cool property of having 10 of each particle. The attempts in discovery of neon also help lead to the discovery of Krypton during the same process.

Structures!

A neon atom looks something like this!

Sometimes exciting to the state of radiating 632.8 nm

Helium-Neon Lasers

  • A mixture of helium and neon gases, with approx. a 10:1 ratio
  • Excited helium atoms collide with neon atoms
  • Without Helium, most Neon with be less excited; non-laser lines

When charge is sent between the Anode and Cathode

  • Used for industrial and scientific purposes, widely in laboratory demo

People Actually USE Neon?

Neon, the Final Frontier

  • Commenly used in signs for advertising

  • Neon is abundant on a universal scale
  • Is the fifth most abundant chemical element in the universe by mass
  • Relatively rare to find naturally on Earth
