Running with Scissors is a memoir about

Augusten Burroughs and his interesting, and in my opinion, psychotic life. His mother is a poet and smokes about a pack a day, which influences Augusten to smoke also. His dad is a college teacher whom is an alcoholic. His parents get a divorce, and after the divorce Augusten's mother went to a psychotic psychiatrist. Later in the book she basically gives away Augusten to the psychiatrist who tells Augusten that when he turns 13 he should be able to make his own decisions. The decisions he makes is influenced by the psychiatrist's many adopted children and with this influence, he loses his innocence.

Central Theme of Book

Loss of Innocence

Influence by others

The theme in Running with Scissors relates to the real world because the age Augusten was, was about 13-16 years old. At this age, people become highschool students and in highschool we make new friends. We are influenced by those new friends we make, just the same as Augusten was influenced by these adopted children he hung out with.

At this age is where we also lose our innocence. Augusten is indeed gay and has a 31 year old boyfriend that teaches him about how gay people have sex. The moment he "experiences" this is the moment he loses his innocence as a child. Not everyone will lose their innocence this way, in the real world, we could lose our innocence by, for example, skipping school, cussing, or doing things that we have never thought of doing. Things that adults would not agree with. We will be rebellious.

2 References to the theme I've chosen.

The Natural by

Bernard Malamud

The Movie :

Loss of Innocence

I found this book to be amusing but a bit disturbing because of the sexual content in the book. Other than that, I would recommend this book to people who want something different or funny to read. But fair warning, it does talk about gay sex.

His father was a college teacher and also

an alcoholic.
