Life Cycle of an Echidna

Adulthood

  • Echidnas live to be about 16 years old
  • Females grow up to be about 10 pounds
  • Males can be up to 13 pounds

FUN FACT: Echidnas don't have teeth

Becoming an Adult

Growing up

  • The claws and spines are fully developed after seven months
  • Then the echidnas begin eating ants and termites
  • They have strong front paws and long nails that are good for tearing into ant hills and termite mounds
  • Their long, sticky tongue helps them eat
  • After 2-3 months the baby echidna grows spines
  • The mother echidna takes the baby out of her pouch and makes a burrow
  • They suckle milk for another six months in the burrow

Facts about Echidnas

  • Echindas are found in Australia and New Guinea
  • They are one of only two mammals that lay eggs
  • The other mammal that lays eggs is a platypus
  • Since echidnas are marsupials, they have pouches where the babies drink milk

Eggs

  • Echidnas lay one egg at a time
  • These eggs hatch in about 10 days
  • The babies are born hairless and blind
  • They drink milk from their mother's pouch for two to three months
