Eisenhower's address was very logical. It is important to spend the nation's money at a reasonable rate than to just invest too much to lead into debt.

My Opinion

I agree with President Eisenhower. He was a five-star Army General, which makes him a credible source for this type of speech that he made. He wanted to save money and not spend unreasonable amounts for war equipment. He said in one of his speeches "The jet plane that roars overhead costs three quarters of a million dollars. That's more than a man will make in his lifetime. What world can afford this kind of thing for long?" This is such a simple yet powerful saying because we definitely don't want a repeat of the Great Depression, and President Eisenhower is doing what he can in his speech to warn the people who serve after him.

Reasoning Behind the Speech

Eisenhower warned: "In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military-industrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist." (historynewsnwork.org)

President Eisenhower made this speech because he wanted his successors to gain a balance between a strong national defense and diplomacy in dealing with the Soviet Union. He also cautioned that the federal government's collaboration with an alliance of military and industrial leaders was necessary but was also vulnerable to power abuse. President Eisenhower also recommended for Americans to be aware as consumers with regard to the environment.

Eisenhower's Farewell Speech

History

As a conservative, President Eisenhower was troubled by the growing size and cost of the American defense establishment ever since his presidency began in 1953. He started his warning of the military industrial complex by describing the changing nature of the American defense establishment since WWII. The United States couldn't afford the emergency improvisation that stood for its preparations for war against Germany and Japan. The US was compelled to "created a permanent armaments industry" and a huge military force. President Eisenhower was mostly concerned of the "acquisition of unwarranted influence...by the military industrial complex".
