Theme: Just because someone is viewed as abnormal doesn't mean their ideas are wrong.

  • A scene that also shows Clarisse's bizarre way thinking is when she is holding a dandelion and says, " If it rubs off, it means I'm in love,(19)." She rubs it on her chin and then she rubs it on Montag's chin, " What a shame," she said. " You're not in love with anyone,(19)." Montag replied very defensively saying of course he was in love.
  • Clarisse tells Montag that she has to go to a psychiatrist.
  • A psychiatrist is a medical practitioner specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of mental illness.
  • " Any man's insane who thinks he can fool the government and us," (31).
  • This statement shows that if you own books, you are automatically considered insane.
  • " Luckily, queer ones like her don't happen to often. We know how to nip most of them in the bud early,(58)".
  • Clarisse obviously has different views than a majority of her society and another point she makes to Montag is about socializing. How the definition of socializing in their society means watching TV and playing sports but not really talking and engaging with one another.
  • She tells Montag, ' I guess I'm everything they say I am, all right. I haven't any friends. That's supposed to prove I'm abnormal. But everyone I know is either shouting or dancing around like wild or beating up one another, (27)". Everyone else Clarisse's age is killing each other and not taking responsibility.
  • Clarisse is considered crazy or abnormal by the society in which she lives. She introduces herself to Montag admitting," I'm seventeen and crazy. My uncle says the two always go together. When people ask your age, he said, always say seventeen and insane, (5).
  • Montag also acknowledges her odd behavior, " You are an odd one, ( 7).
  • She is well aware that she is viewed as crazy and insane, yet it doesn't seem to bother her.

  • Clarisse is very kind to Montag, and kindness doesn't seem very common in their society since most people are caught up with their "relatives". Several times Montag has found bouquets of flowers, or handfuls of chestnuts, or some autumn leaves neatly pinned to a sheet of paper and thumb tacked to his door. She goes out of her way to bring little gifts to him.
  • Clarisse talks about the society she lives, is to fast, " I sometimes think drivers don't know what grass is, or flowers, because they never see them slowly...if you showed a driver a green blur, Oh yes! he'd say, that's grass! A pink blur? That's a rose garden! White blurs are houses. Brown blurs are cows. My uncle drove slowly on a highway once. He drove forty miles an hour and they jailed him for two days. Isn't that funny, and sad,too?,"(6). Montag replies by telling her she thinks to many things.
  • Later on in that conversation, right before she is about to leave she asks him if he is happy. He seems almost appalled that she would ask such a question. But then as he starts to think about, is he really happy?
  • When Monatg asks what she is up to she responds, " I'm still crazy,(17)."
  • Clarisse has a different view on life and asks and tells Montag things he has never thought about.
  • Ex.) " Rain even taste good,(19)...Have you ever heard of rubbing it under your chin?,(19)...What a shame...You're not in love with anyone,(19)."
  • She is viewed as odd and some what dangerous in her society.
  • Monatg and his fellow firemen are going to another house to burn it. Yet when they get there, the woman lights the match that brings the house up in flames.
  • " On the front porch where she had come to weigh them quietly with her eyes, her quietness a condemnation, the woman stood motionless. ," (36).
  • " They said nothing on their way back to the firehouse. Nobody looked at anyone else,"(37)
