The Black Devil

Reproduction

  • One of the most bizarre methods ever!!

Attachment

Boom "Esca"

  • Once the male matures its digestive system starts to degenerate. (screwed once again)
  • The males only hope is its powerful sense of smell to locate a female that is secreting pheromones.
  • They have soft thin bones and jelly like flesh that provide great buoyancy to float steady.
  • Once located it uses it hooked teeth to attach to the female and releases a enzyme that dissolves the skin of his mouth and that of the females.
  • Has a rounded black body, and looks like a swimming 8-ball.

This won't be the last time the male gets screwed!

Fusing

  • The two become fused together and the blood vessels join as one. (what a life at least there is no more suffering)
  • Females have an bioluminescence bulb at the end of there illicium called an "esca". Males do not have this fun glowie bulb or even the rod.

By the way hooked teeth

suck for catching prey!

  • The male is essentially becomes a parasite pair of gonads that receives all its nourishment from the female.
  • The female can carry up to six different males, and when she is ready to reproduce has sperm readily available.
  • Males have hooked teeth, and the females have inward facing teeth.

Being small in the deep sea is like being small in prison, not an advantage!

  • After fertilization the female lays the eggs in a gelatinous material 1m wide and 9m long that is free floating.
  • Females are 10-15 cm and males are 1-2 cm in length and will never grow larger.
  • The eggs hatch and swim to the top to feed on plankton.
  • Males have large nostrils and have a powerful sense of smell.

Maybe there is still hope!!!

The Angler Fish

Habitat

Master Predator

  • Since there is such a wide diversity of angler fish they have been found all over the world and in different temperature ranges and depths.

True facts video

Last Notes

  • Can live up to 24 years.
  • Once mature have little to no preditors.
  • only uses about 2% of it energy for swimming.
  • The family Lophius is fished commercially, and is considered a delicacy.

Black Devil Angler fish

  • It is said to be comparable to lobster tail taste and texture.
  • Have been mostly found in the pacific, atlantic but have also been found in other parts of the world.
  • In the dark depths of the ocean the female moves it "esca" the glowie thing back in forth in front of her mouth to attract prey. Once the prey is close enough its fate is sealed.
  • Juvenile angler fish live near the surface and migrate to the depths as they age.

Citations

  • Adult deep sea angler fish live up to 4000 meters deep.
  • The esca contains photoluminescent bacteria of the genus vibrio, and is a symbiotic relationship.

  • The pressure is about 380 atm, and the temperature is about 2-3 degrees Celsius.
  • Prey usually consists of prawns, squid, fish, cod, sand eel, turtles, crustaceans, also it will pretty much eat anything that can fit in it mouth. The angler fish also has extendable jaws and stomach to eat prey up to 3 times it size.

  • At these depths there is no light
  • http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anglerfish
  • Fun fact the wavelength of light given off by the bacteria is absorbed by the angler fish to remain invisible.
  • Bonus fun fact: Some of the bacteria from the mother is excreted to her offspring.

All sorts of ugly!!

  • There are over 300 different species of angler fish throughout the world.
  • They are not contained to a specific family or genera, but do belong to the same order "Lophiiformes."
  • Angler fish are sexually dimorphic, the female is significantly larger than the male and have "illicium," a modified dorsal fin that protrudes from the middle of the head that is used like a fishing rod to lure prey.

Common name "Black Devil Fish"

  • At the end of the illicium is a bulbous used for a lure to capture prey.
  • Angler fish range in size from 1 inches to about 1 meter and can weight up to 110 pounds.
