Do Now: Take out your notebook and writing utensil and answer:

  • What do all the following objects have in common?

  • Why do you think there are so many different kinds?

Audience (design definition): the person or group of people for whom a product is designed

Prototype: An early version of a product, system, or design.

Prototypes (also called iterations) are crucial because they allow designers to test their ideas before the commit to them.

Iteration, prototyping and improvement

Problem Brainstorm:With your table, brainstorm five problems that go along with washing your hands in public restrooms.

Drying Your Hands in a Public Bathroom

We talked about audience and its role in the creation of new designs. What do you think is the primary role in the creation of the different ways of drying hands?

Design can come about as a way to improve upon an existing system. The audience is still there, and style matters, but for public health products, another concern is: "Is this the healthiest way to do something?"

Each one of these designs are iterations. They seek to improve upon the system that came before.

Designers depend upon iterations to get their designs right. We will talk about iterations more in the future.
