Japanese Flute
Flute
There is a type of Japanese flute called the 'shakuhachi'. This flute is similar to the recorder, but has fewer openings and the mouthpiece is very different. It is usually made of bamboo, but there are plastic and/or wood versions today.
People play this instrument vertically, unlike the flutes we know. (kind of like a recorder)
The Shakuhachi was used by Zen buddhist monks to perform a type of meditation.
What can/can't the flute do?
Indian Flute
Flutes can play really high and can be heard easily across the room. They usually carry the melody of a song/piece. However, flutes can't play low.
The Indian flute is called a 'bansuri'. It is side blown, has no keys, and is usually made of bamboo or a type of cane.

There are many different types of flutes across the world. One type is the Chinese simple flute. It has a thin paper over one whole, that adds a raspiness to the sound. This type of flute also has no keys.

When was the flute invented?
Wooden flutes have existed from a long time ago. The oldest flute was found in Slovenia, and it was about 43,000 years old. It was made from a piece of bone from a cave bear.
However, Theobald Boehem invented the first metal flute.This was because wooden flutes didn't last as long as metal flutes.

History
A long time ago, flutes were made of bones. They were used for magical rituals or during hunting.
Afterwards, flutes were made of bamboo or wood. Also, they didn't have any keys.
From the 16th century, flutes became what we know as today.
Flutes used to be made out of wood, but people changed to using metal because wood didn't last that long. As stated before, Theobald Boehem invented the first metal flutes. Nowadays, flutes are usually made out of silver, gold, platinum, or other types of metal.
